Why shouldn't you sleep with a mirror facing you?

If you catch yourself or other movements in the reflection it can be difficult for the brain to switch off and go to sleep. This can cause problems like “sleep paralysis” (also known as a hypnagogic hallucination), a condition which causes sufferers to feel as though they are between a sleeping and waking state.

The mirror is a great asset to have in your bedroom. It gives you confidence, makes you feel good about yourself, and helps you get ready for the day. However, there are many reasons why you shouldn’t have a mirror facing your bed.

5 reasons why you shouldn’t have a mirror facing your bed

1. Depleting Personal Energy

The problem with mirrors is that they reflect what is happening around them, which means they take focus away from you and this is especially true of a mirror in the bedroom. When you are looking at yourself in a mirror, you are taking in all of the negative things going on around you – the phone ringing, the clock ticking, traffic noise, etc, while simultaneously ignoring what your body is telling you. Such as, it needs rest or relaxation or something to eat or drink.

2. Creating Sleeplessness

If you are lying in bed with the mirror facing you and the bedside table lamp on, you will see your reflection every time you wake up. You will also see your reflection when you go to sleep and whenever you get up in the middle of the night. According to experts, having a mirror opposite your bed is one of the most common causes of insomnia. If you catch yourself or other movements in the reflection it can be difficult for the brain to switch off and go to sleep. This can cause problems like “sleep paralysis” (also known as a hypnagogic hallucination), a condition which causes sufferers to feel as though they are between a sleeping and waking state. It can cause trouble with breathing and even bring on hallucinations where they feel that someone or something is trying to communicate with them. Having a mirror opposite you in bed is also bad Feng shui and could potentially lead to sleepwalking. Sleep paralysis can lead to a sleepwalking episode where you are unable to control your body movements.

3. Nightmares

Having a mirror opposite your bed can lead to nightmares. If you wake up in the middle of the night and look at the reflection, you can potentially see something you don’t like looking back at you! I know I certainly don’t want to see my reflection in the middle of the night. If you are half awake, you might not be able to make sense of the reflection which can be disturbing and cause anxiety. If you have a full length mirror facing your bed, this can reflect a lot of dark corners and movement in the room such as a curtain blowing or your partner moving.

4. Movements making it difficult to go back to sleep

Mirrors reflect everything that is going on in your room and if you have it opposite to where you are sleeping, you may find it difficult to get to sleep. A bedroom at night time is a quiet and peaceful place so any movement, no matter how small, can be exaggerated whilst you are trying to get to sleep. Our muscles tend to relax when we are just drifting off so we are not alert. Any movement can make us jump more than normal.

5. Hearing Strange Sounds

Strange or loud sounds can be reflected off a mirror, just like light. If your phone is not on silent or your partner snores, this sound can easily be reflected off the mirror and make it sound a lot louder. Mirrors can also vibrate if there are loud sounds and make the sound appear a lot noisier than it really is, especially at night. If you have a ceiling fan in your bedroom, this can also cause noise problems. Fans move air around inside your bedroom and the continuous hum can cause insomnia. If you can’t live without a ceiling fan, invest in some earplugs to keep out the continuous hum. Reflections from mirrors in the bedroom at night might be unsettling and can cause numerous sleep problems.

Where should a mirror be placed in the bedroom?

Since there is no way to stop movement in the bedroom when you are trying to get to sleep, avoid putting a mirror facing your bed. Be mindful of how big your mirror is and where it will go when looking at bedroom mirror ideas. If you are looking for a mirror for a master bedroom, try and place them opposite a window to reflect light around the room or above a chest of drawers or desk that isn’t opposite your bed to make the most of your bedroom space.
