Why do old men sit down to pee?

The prostate gland is roughly the size of a walnut and increases in size as you get older. So, sitting down to wee helps fully relax the muscles in the pelvic region – which aids in emptying the bladder and help create a far stronger flow when urinating.

Men ‘treating’ themselves to a ‘sit down wee’ is nothing new, but it has been proven, that men suffering with prostate problems are better off sitting down when emptying their bladder. Research carried out by Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands suggests that men with prostate issues should opt to sit down when going to the loo. The prostate gland is roughly the size of a walnut and increases in size as you get older. So, sitting down to wee helps fully relax the muscles in the pelvic region – which aids in emptying the bladder and help create a far stronger flow when urinating. It is not uncommon for men with an enlarged prostate to develop symptoms such as; difficulty starting; straining while urinating; pain urinating; weak flow; not feeling fully empty and blood in urine or blood in semen. These symptoms can sometimes be the signs of prostatitis – a bacterial infection, easily treated with medication. For some men, it could be the signs of prostate cancer – the most common cancer found in men. Figures show that the biggest cancer diagnosis in the UK is now prostate cancer, overtaking breast cancer – previously the most common cancer. The surge in numbers is thought to be due to men now living longer and more awareness surrounding the disease – including high profile men such as Stephen Fry and former BBC Journalist, Bill Turnbull going public about their diagnosis and urging the public not to delay any cancer screening they may have. If you suffer with any of the above symptoms, it is advised that you go to see your General Practitioner (GP) or family doctor at the earliest, as they can help rule out anything sinister.

Prostate cancer is more common for men in their 50s and older.

For most men, the onset of the above symptoms is usually because their prostate gland naturally enlarges as they age and begins putting pressure on their urethra. So, if you struggle to get going when peeing standing up, a sit down wee may just improve your situation. It’ll also keep your partner off your back about missing the target and splashing the toilet seat. There are some added benefits to a sit down wee, such as being able to go hands-free playing games or scrolling through your phone - this can be dangerous though, as it is easy to lose track of time and end up sat there for hours. Leaving you with pins and needles in both legs and unable to stand up again. Not mentioning the potential poor hygiene risks, ending up with bacteria on your smart phone. Please share this so more men know the signs and are aware of what to do if they’re suffering from prostate problems. Topic Overview

The following tips may make it easier to deal with your benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) symptoms. Practice "double voiding" by urinating as much as possible, relaxing for a few moments, and then urinating again. Try to relax before you urinate. Tension from worrying about your symptoms can make them worse. Anxiety may cause the smooth muscle in the prostate and the muscles at the opening of the bladder to stay tense and not relax. If these muscles do not relax, urination will be difficult.

Take plenty of time to urinate.

Try sitting on the toilet instead of standing. Or, after urinating while standing, sit on the toilet and try to urinate a little more.

Think of other things or read while you are waiting.

Try turning on a faucet or picturing running water in your mind. Some men find that hearing running water helps get their urine flowing. If dribbling is a problem, wash your penis daily to avoid skin irritation and infection.
