Read More »Men ‘treating’ themselves to a ‘sit down wee’ is nothing new, but it has been proven, that men suffering with prostate problems are better off sitting down when emptying their bladder. Research carried out by Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands suggests that men with prostate issues should opt to sit down when going to the loo. The prostate gland is roughly the size of a walnut and increases in size as you get older. So, sitting down to wee helps fully relax the muscles in the pelvic region – which aids in emptying the bladder and help create a far stronger flow when urinating. It is not uncommon for men with an enlarged prostate to develop symptoms such as; difficulty starting; straining while urinating; pain urinating; weak flow; not feeling fully empty and blood in urine or blood in semen. These symptoms can sometimes be the signs of prostatitis – a bacterial infection, easily treated with medication. For some men, it could be the signs of prostate cancer – the most common cancer found in men. Figures show that the biggest cancer diagnosis in the UK is now prostate cancer, overtaking breast cancer – previously the most common cancer. The surge in numbers is thought to be due to men now living longer and more awareness surrounding the disease – including high profile men such as Stephen Fry and former BBC Journalist, Bill Turnbull going public about their diagnosis and urging the public not to delay any cancer screening they may have. If you suffer with any of the above symptoms, it is advised that you go to see your General Practitioner (GP) or family doctor at the earliest, as they can help rule out anything sinister.
