"These adaptive functions, when taken out of control, can result in a feedback loop that gets overly active and can spin out of control — to the point where it can create dysfunction rather than function," Dr. Winsberg says, adding that mental health pros draw a clear behavioral distinction between ordinary planning and overthinking. "Oftentimes what determines whether a behavior is adaptive or classified as an illness is what we label, sort of, as interference with social and occupational functioning. In other words, does this behavior interfere with your ability to function in daily life? That's when it can become problematic," she adds.
