Why do doctors check under your pants?

A lot of physicians/PAs/NPs (people who examine patients in a primary care setting) have their own style. It's possible that your doc is checking to determine the contour of your lower abdomen, or the quality/texture of the overlying skin--without having you get more fully undressed.

synapse said: i'm female. i had a physical and i had to wear a paper gown but with my undergarments on. the female doc checked my abdomen and then she just kinda pulled outward my undies just to peek. some docs have you remove them so they can take a look, which is what my pediatrician did back in the days. but i don't understand why she would just pull it open? Click to expand... I had a similiar experience once (I'm male and my FP was male).I'd seen him since I was quite a small child. I was about 13 or 14 I guess, and was getting a physical for soccer. He did the standard tests, and checked my abdomen and everything....then he lifted my jeans and underwear in one slick movement and "peeked" at my genital area. At the time it seemed strange, but I just figured he was doing his job.The true answer is listed above. The HCP needs to check to see if you are progressing normally...growing a fat pad over your symphysis pubis, proper distribution of pubic hair, lack of genital abnormality (self mutilation, etc.).A lack of pubic hair could mean a number of things, and is a great tip off. It's also a backdoor into (at least for females) their sexual maturity stage. What I mean is, if I see a young lady of 15 with a very neatly shaven pubic area I might try to broach the "bcp/sex" conversation a bit more readily whereas an "untended" youth who is wearing a care bear T-shirt might require a bit more circuitous path towards a sexual history.I still have to see how I want to practice, but judging my personal methods on most other things, I guess I'd be more direct. I'll probably do as suggested above and say, "Please put on this gown, but keep on your bra and panties. However, during the exam I'll bring a standby in and need to see your breasts and genitals to ensure proper development and lack of hormonal problems. Do you have any questions about that?"Of course, if you only have 15 mins, and you're that confident, maybe the "peek" is more time saving.

Index:

Andrology is a medical specialty which deals with the male reproductive system and urological problems found only in men. Andrology is the direct equivalent of gynaecology, but unlike gynaecology, it is not widely recognised as its own distinct speciality. Andrology has been studied only since the late end of the 1960s. Andrologists are largely urologists, or endocrinologists in some circumstances, at least in the UK. However, depending on the condition or procedure, a patient may see other types of specialists, including surgeons or psychiatrists. Andrology covers a wide number of conditions and functions, including male fertility, penile problems, and genitourinary disorders. Specialists in andrology may deal with procedures such as vasectomy, prostatectomy, and circumcision.
