3 reasons why your testicles have become bigger

Can bigger testicles be a cause for concern? Dr Anup Ramani answers.

Men are usually insecure when it comes to the size of their penis, but what about the testicles? Most of them would welcome a large penis, but increase in the size of the testicles would create panic. And it should, because unlike the proverbial big balls , big testicles in real life are indicators of something sinister happening in the body and not an indication of courage. Dr Anup Ramani, Uro-Oncological robotic surgeon, Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai, reveals the reasons why some men may have hypergonadism or unusually large testicles. Read: Why some men experience shrinking of the testicles. Tumour: A thumb rule that we doctors follow when anyone comes with a complaint of hypergonadism is that we first rule out the presence of tumours, says Dr Ramani. Testicles can increase in size sometimes due to the presence of tumours according to the doctor. The enlargement of the testicles, in such cases, will be accompanied by a dull ache and a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum. These tumours may be benign or malignant. Among the non-cancerous ones are benign teratoma, epidermoid cyst and fibromas. Read: Signs of hypogonadism or small testicles. Excessive levels of testosterone: Dr Rupani says, Too much testosterone in the body can cause enlargement of the testicles. Testosterone is the male hormone which is produced in the man s testicles. During puberty, when the production of the hormone increases, young men experience growth in the size of the testicles. But even at a later phase, when the production of testosterone spikes, the testicles can grow. Read: Men with smaller testicles are better fathers. Use of anabolic steroids: A lot is written about how steroids cause testicular atrophy or shrinkage of the testicles but did you know that abusing anabolic steroids can also cause the reverse? Many athletes and bodybuilders consume steroids for performance enhancements. Prolonged use of these steroids can cause can enlargement of the testes according to Dr Ramani. Read: How anabolic steroids affect the body.

How many times should I urinate in a day?

For most people, the normal number of times to urinate per day is between 6 – 7 in a 24 hour period. Between 4 and 10 times a day can also be normal if that person is healthy and happy with the number of times they visit the toilet.

Frequency refers to the number of times you go to the toilet to pass urine in a day. If you need to go to the toilet very often, more than seven times a day on drinking approximately 2 litres of fluid, you may have a frequency problem. This can be caused by an overactive bladder. The bladder might contract even when it doesn’t need to; for example, if your bladder only has a small amount of urine in it, or may be oversensitive. This means that you feel the need to go to the toilet more often. Frequency is often associated with urgency and urge incontinence. You can find information about treatment options available if you find yourself going to the toilet too often.
