9 Publications That Pay for Personal Essays Put your creative non-fiction skills to work Photo by Rita Morais on Unsplash One of the greatest skills a writer can have is to tell a compelling personal story. It’s a fine line between coming off like a teenager's angsty journal entry and an interesting personal narrative that will connect with readers. As an editor, I have seen the good, the bad, and the…well, not so good. If you can master the art of the personal essay, there are many ways to make money off it. Well, if you know where to look. Having spent some time writing personal essays and then pitching them, I’d love to share my research with you, and hopefully, this saves you time. I know I have spent a lot of time going down rabbit holes of dead links and publications that no longer exist or take unsolicited submissions. It can be frustrating looking for a home for your latest personal masterpiece. One thing you will need for some of these is to create a free Submittable account. It’s an online system that some publications use to manage submissions —and in my opinion, it’s far easier than email. 1. Slate Slate specialises in news, politics, and culture, but they take pitches on a wide range of topics including personal essays. Advice: On their submissions page, they have a template pitch email. Obviously, follow this for Slate, but it can be used to pitch any others in this list. Note: They only accept submissions September through December and March through June. Don’t submit outside this time. Word Count: 1,500–1,700 words Specialty: “Making smart, witty, persuasive statements.” Apply here. 2. Bustle Advice: They have an article by their editor with 11 tips for writing personal essays. Study this and follow it. Note: They don't want full articles only a pitch that includes a two to three sentence summary Word Count: 1,500–1,700 words Specialty: Timely personal essays Apply here. 3. The New York Times Let’s aim high and try the New York Times. Their Modern Love section is well respected and even spawned an Amazon TV series. So who knows, your essay could make it all the way to the big screen. Advice: Check out this interview that Kelly Eden did with someone who successfully pitched Modern Love. Note: They only accept submissions September through December and March through June. Don't submit outside this time. Word Count: 1,500–1,700 words Specialty: Romance Apply here.

4. Boston Globe As the name implies, it’s based in Boston but open to writers from anywhere. Advice: Get some inspiration from this essay. Note: The word count is quite low, so pack a punch in your intro. The low word count may seem like easier work, but from some experience, it can be much harder to tell a compelling personal story in so few words! Word Count: 650 words Specialty: Anything on any relationship. This includes relationships between family, friends, parents, etc. Apply here. 5. The Sun This is a very prestigious publication with personal essays published here winning Pushcart Prizes and Best American Essays. They pay up to $2,000. Advice: They recommend you read some sample essays before submitting. You can check them out here. Note: They use the tagline, “Personal. Political. Provocative.” Incorporate that into your writing. Word Count: No minimum. Maximum 7,000 words. Specialty: High-quality pieces! Apply here. 6. Slice They are looking for anyone with a fresh voice and a compelling story to share, and they are particularly enthusiastic about championing emerging voices. They pay $400 for personal essays. Advice: They recommend you read some sample essays before submitting. You can check them out here. Note: They are a printed magazine and they have specific reading periods. The current reading period is open until December 1 for their fall issue. Word Count: No minimum. Maximum 5,000 words Specialty: They often have a cultural theme for each issue, so check out the latest theme. Apply here. 7. VQR This is quite a difficult publication to get into with a high standard and limited reading time, but if you believe you have the skills, then go for it! They pay $1,000 for articles in their print magazine and up to $200 for online content Advice: Check out their past issues (notice a pattern here?). Note: They only take submissions in July Word Count: 3,500–9,000 words Specialty: They are quite selective on personal essays, and the best chance is with travel essays. In general, they are looking for nonfiction that looks out on the world, rather than within the self. Apply here.
