Male or female pattern hair loss is a type of permanent loss of hair from the scalp. It is associated with male hormones called androgens, hence the name. As you likely know, your hair grows from follicles in your scalp. These follicles follow a three-phase growth cycle: Anagen: This is the growth phase. Typically, this is the longest phase and the majority of follicles are in it. Catagen: This is the transitional phase. It is the shortest phase and represents the end of the growth period. Telogen: This is the resting phase. It is an important part of how your hair follicles renew so they can reenter the anagen phase. In a health scalp, less than 10% of follicles are in this phase. Androgenetic alopecia caused some changes to this hair growth cycle. The main culprit is an androgen called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This is a more potent form of testosterone. While DHT plays an important role in the body, especially for young males, it can also cause some unwanted side effects. The most notable and frustrating for many people is hair loss. DHT causes the hair follicles to slowly shrink. They then receive fewer nutrients and oxygen through the blood vessels in the scalp. Furthermore, they spend much more time in the telogen phase. Eventually, the anagen phase will be so short that the hair strands never break through the skin.
