Red may be the biggest hair-color trend for fall, but it's no one-shade pony. Here, five ways to go crimson this season.

Read More »There is no precise census on Earth's current redhead population, but based on the prevalence of its associated gene mutation, gorgeous crimson-shaded hair afflicts less than two percent of human beings. (The figures are markedly higher — between 10 and 30 percent — in the Republic of Ireland.) And yet some version of the color — from spiced cherry to neon tangerine and cinnamon cider — is being requested at salons more than ever before, as redheads are minted at increasingly delirious speeds. For more than half of her 11 years at Marie Robinson salon, the colorist Angela Hazelton can remember performing one, maybe two red dye jobs. Lately, she is doing at least one a day. "Red is really having a moment," Hazelton says. Gigi Hadid went cinnamon cider after watching Netflix's The Queen's Gambit starring Anya Taylor-Joy (who insisted her character be a redhead to be "completely identifiable, even if she doesn’t want to be"). When she's promoting the Spider-Man series, Zendaya chooses cherrier hair in tribute to her character from the comics, but needed much less of a reason to go burnt copper last Christmas: "It was time for a change." (Did you know she sometimes just Overtones it?) After the pandemic stalled the industry, salons and the professionals they employ are in greater demand than ever, and the Board of Labor Statistics predicts the sector will only grow in the next 10 years. The hair color market in particular is ballooning — by some reports, even faster than cosmetics — and is poised to offer previously unthinkable dye options by the end of this decade. Soon, we will all be just like Zendaya, becoming redheads a few times a year for special press outings and major holidays. Hazelton says it is at least worth our consideration: "Anybody can go red." Even you!
