What is the goal of a man?

K. H. Peschke in his book Christian Ethics listed four ultimate goals of man namely; temporal happiness and welfare, self-perfection and temporal progress, realization of values as an ultimate purpose, and glorification of the Kingdom of God. Temporal happiness is a goal where in man's ultimate purpose is happiness.

A MAN'S character is formed by his experiences and goals, his past and intended future, and where he had been and where he is going. People merely tend to look at a person’s past to understand his present behavior however a thorough investigation and study confirm there are questions that are left unanswered. What defines our attitudes is not only caused by our previous experiences but also by our goals that set the direction of our lives. K. H. Peschke in his book Christian Ethics listed four ultimate goals of man namely; temporal happiness and welfare, self-perfection and temporal progress, realization of values as an ultimate purpose, and glorification of the Kingdom of God. Temporal happiness is a goal where in man’s ultimate purpose is happiness. This happiness is temporal and so it means it is a worldly type. A lot of people especially this past generations have this kind of mindset.” Enjoy life while we can, Life is short so enjoy it, go to the party, eat the food you want, or explore life.” If taking illegal drugs makes one happy then to him the act is acceptable and not sinful because of the fact that it makes him/her happy. The negative maxim of this ultimate goal is anything that hinders a man to be happy is bad and sinful. It must be avoided. If a crime is committed at party thus putting the party to a halt it is bad and sinful because it stopped the party that is giving him fun. If he got a flu that hindered him to eat his favorite dessert then getting sick is bad and it must be avoided. The danger here is that it is regardless of the reason that stopping him to be happy is bad and sinful therefore if a mother does not let a daughter or son to join his friends’ victory party her mother is bad. Self-perfection assails oneself to aim, as the word dictates, perfection. His ultimate goal is to be the master of his craft, become the best in his chosen field. It is becoming the perfect man he wanted to be. Thus a man finds himself reading every pages of any book that touches his hand to know things he has not encountered. Some people spent their lives in a laboratory trying to discover and invent. This is highly beneficial since people who has this goal become highly productive. They are likely to excel in their chosen field. Businesspeople, inventors, scientist, Olympians, and the like are some examples to wit. The danger here lies in the tendency that people become obsessed of honing their crafts thus ignoring other people that surrounds them. They tend to become self-centered and self-righteous. They fail to see the needs of their wife, children, and other people. Anything that contradicts and disrupts their study, practice, experiments are bad and sinful. Third is the realization of values where the ultimate purpose is man’s endeavor to develop and actualize values for the lone sake of their worth and beauty. In the words of Peschke this ultimate goal, unlike the other two mentioned above which judge the morality of an act based on their contribution to the respective goals, is independent. One does not act in order to reach another goal like perfection but simply the doing of the good act independently become the goal itself. It is striving to be good simply by being kind, caring, and understanding to others. The pedagogy appears to be that one must do such act so that others would also do it. Thus people in the times of crisis offer help to those in need. The help is not for something transcendental but for the sake that helping is a value and that you intend to be assisted as well when you encounter the same. Nevertheless others especially who belong to a religion says this goal has a huge defect and shortcoming. Where does the danger lie? Outside man’s rationality, it does not recognize divine intervention. If one thinks that it is a good act he will do it. Man’s basis here is their own reasoning and this opens up the great danger for man oftentimes fail to know what the must-do act in a particular situation without His guidance.

Lastly, the glorification of the God as man’s ultimate purpose. Man’s goal is simple yet the most challenging of all. Here a man deviates from the materialistic view of others and see success a goal never to be found in earthly achievements but in His glory. There is that reason why he/she shows kindness to others, there is that reason why he/she forgives others no matter how deeply hurt he/she is, why she sings a song soulfully and that reason is to glorify Him. Everything one does is all for the glorification of God. That is where the challenge is. People who has this goal has the mindset that success is not to have the most luxurious cars, the vast land property, how much do they have in the bank, or what kind of job they have. What gives them happiness is the feeling that they are serving Him in every possible way they can. One accepts the duty to proclaim His Kingdom not only through words but mostly through deeds. In the course of history we have seen people who have become witness to this purpose. They were the ones who have sacrificed their lives, given their properties, left their own loved ones, and some religiously followed the vow of poverty just to follow God. In the truest sense of the word the ultimate goal is to be with Him at the end of time. Each separate goal develops a distinct character for every person who has it. A person’s aloofness and withdrawal from society can easily be attributed by psychologist to his traumatic experience in his childhood.
