BMC Urologist is the First in Boulder to Offer Rezūm Procedure

Minimally Invasive, In-Office Procedure Relieves BPH Symptoms

Boulder Medical Center urologist, Dr. Carolyn Fronczak, is the first Boulder County doctor to offer the Rezūm procedure for treatment of enlarged prostate, also referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH. According to the National Kidney Foundation, BPH is the most common prostate health problem among U.S. men over the age of 50. Half of men ages 50 to 60 will develop BPH. The American Urological Association also finds that 70 percent of men ages 60 to 69 and 80 percent of those 70 and over will develop BPH and bothersome urinary symptoms. When the prostate gland becomes larger as men age, prostate tissue can grow into, and pinch off the urethra. The urethra is the tube that carries urine from the bladder outward. A pinched urethra leads to bothersome urinary symptoms such as slow and intermittent urinary stream, urinary frequency and urgency, incomplete emptying, and multiple nighttime trips to the bathroom. These symptoms reduce quality of life, interrupt sleep, and can lead to bladder dysfunction and kidney failure in the most severe cases.

Rezūm Relieves Enlarged Prostate Symptoms

Rezūm is a minimally invasive, in-office procedure that relieves BPH symptoms safely and effectively, with minimal side effects. The procedure is done in one office visit and takes about 15 minutes with little, if any, discomfort to patients. Men typically return to their normal activities within a few days. The treatment is an alternative to BPH medications and the traditional Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) or “roto-rooter” treatment that is done in a hospital operating room with general or spinal anesthesia and requires one or two nights stay in the hospital. “I want to let men know that I am performing the wonderful Rezūm procedure in my Boulder Medical Center clinic,” says Dr. Fronczak. “Rezūm is safe with absolutely no risk of urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction. You don’t need to go to the operating room, be put to sleep, or spend a night in the hospital. Moreover, you can stop your daily BPH medications after Rezūm, which means no more adverse side effects such as dizziness, retrograde ejaculation, lower libido, or erectile dysfunction that can occur with these prescriptions.” Rezūm uses the natural energy stored in water vapor, or steam, to treat the prostate gland. When delivered into the targeted prostate tissue, the steam turns back into water, releasing all of the stored energy. This injures the prostate cells, which are then absorbed into the body. Loss of the dead cells shrinks the prostrate.

“I love this procedure because the water vapor travels only within the prostrate capsule and there is no risk of injury to surrounding tissues,” Dr. Fronczak explains. “When the prostate shrinks, the urethra opens, and most patients begin to experience symptom relief in as soon as two weeks, with maximum benefit within three months.” As an added benefit to patients, Rezūm is considered medically necessary by Medicare and most private insurances. “I am excited to offer the Rezūm technology to help men relieve their enlarged prostate symptoms, get off of BPH medications, experience uninterrupted sleep, and continue enjoying their active lifestyle,” Dr. Fronczak says..
