The different ways of thinking about health and well being

Well - being is about how individuals feel about themselves, feeling healthy, happy and well off. Having a good self concept gives an individual a feeling of well- being.

Health – is a having a state of sound body and mind

Health and well-being is made up of four factors, physical, intellectual, emotional and social. These are the factors that help us through the day and keep us going. Physical health – this the functioning of the body. It is easy to measure.

Intellectual health – this the ability to think clearly

Emotional health – this is the ability to recognise emotions such as fear, joy, grief, anger etc. And to express them appropriately. It also involves the ability to cope with stress, anxiety and depression. Social health – this is the ability to communicate with other people and form relationships. "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

Negative definition of health and well – being is where an individual believes they have a good state of health and well- being because they have nothing wrong with them i.e. no physical illness, disease, injury, mental stress, free from pain and discomfort. Individuals with this view regard good health as normal and do very little to maintain their health and well- being. They believe not visiting a GP for years is an indicator of good health. They would not consider themselves ill if they feel a little run down, tired, depressed, have a cold or a headache. Positive definition of health and well- being is where an individual is achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle by being physically fit and having good mental health. The individual regards the things they can do well such as walking, running, having an active life and feeling well as an indicator of good health and well-being . Holistic definition of health and well-being is looking at an individual’s health and lifestyle considering all four factors, physical, intellectual, emotional and social. It focuses on the whole body and mind not just a part of the body and the symptoms of the problem. It will look at the lifestyle of the individual such as nutritional deficiencies, causes of stress and why there is a lack of good health and well-being. A holistic approach will involve the individual taking responsibility for their health and well-being. They do this by educating themselves and being active in maintaining and improving their health and well-being.
