Cialis Works for Most but Not All Men
Cialis, generically called tadalafil, is an effective treatment option for many men who have difficulty obtaining and maintaining erections that are hard enough for intercourse.
Cialis may not work for 20-30% of men who try it for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The most common reasons why Cialis may not have worked are incorrect use or inadequate trial.
It is important to understand that Cialis may not work after the first dose. It is advisable to try at least 8-10 doses before getting concerned about whether or not Cialis is working.
Cialis works best when taken on a daily basis. When Cialis is prescribed on an as-needed basis, it is important to take it on an empty stomach at least 1-2 hours before attempted sexual intercourse.
It is also important that a correct starting dose is chosen based on the severity of erectile dysfunction and the patient’s risk factors for peripheral vascular disease.
A higher dose of Cialis is typically needed in men with poorly controlled diabetes, obesity, renal insufficiency, and high blood pressure that requires multiple medications to control it. A lower dose of Cialis is typically effective in men who are healthier and younger men.
Studies show that among men who initially thought that Cialis did not work for them, many men find that Cialis works well when the dose of Cialis is adequate and it is taken as instructed.
Hormonal Problems: Low Testosterone, Low Thyroid Hormone, High Estradiol, High Prolactin
Hormonal problems in men such as low testosterone and high prolactin are common reasons why medication such as tadalafil (Cialis) may not work well. Correcting of hormonal abnormalities, for which we test routinely at New York Urology Specialists, often leads to improved effectiveness of Cialis.
Cialis Stops Working Well Maybe a Sign of Worsening Vascular Disease
Based on our understanding of how Cialis works, Cialis does not lose potency over time. However, the effectiveness of Cialis in obtaining erections may decrease if vascular insufficiency caused by underlying medical problems is worsened.
Decreased effectiveness of Cialis may be a sign of worsening underlying causes of erectile dysfunction. When we see patients with complaints that medications such as Cialis no longer work, we will retest them to see if anything has changed.
Poor control of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, poor control of diabetes, and weight gain are some of the common causes of why tadalafil (Cialis) may stop working well. Addressing underlying problems is important not only for sexual health but also for heart health.
