What does a Pap smear feel like?

Usually a small spatula or tiny brush is used to gently collect cells from the cervix for the Pap test. You may feel a light scratching when they take the cells, or you may feel nothing at all. You may also have some staining or bleeding after. Gynecological exams should not be painful, but they may be uncomfortable.

My cousin told me pap smears are uncomfortable becasue they like get tissue and that it cna bleed after they do pap tests on You so does a pap smear hurt and also how long after your first period do You have to get a pap test done?????????

It’s a good idea to start getting regular Pap tests at age 21, whether you’ve had vaginal sex or not. A Pap test is one of the most important parts of a gynecological exam. It’s used to look at the cells of the cervix (the narrow, lower part of your uterus, that connects it to your vagina) in order to find cells that could turn into cervical cancer. It’s the best way to prevent cervical cancer. During a Pap test, a nurse or doctor will put a plastic or metal tool called a speculum into your vagina. The speculum opens up to separate the walls of your vagina so that they can see your cervix. You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort when the speculum is put in and opened. Talk with your nurse or doctor about any discomfort you feel during the exam. Here are some things you can do to help make the exam more comfortable:

Breathe slowly and deeply.

Let your stomach muscles go soft.

Relax your shoulders.

Relax the muscles between your legs.

Ask your nurse or doctor to describe what they’re doing as they do it.

Do gynecologist see males?

Can a gynecologist see men?

Gynecology is one of the few gender-specific specialties, but there are some gynecologists who treat men. And not surprisingly, there’s some controversy. The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology recently reversed a previous policy and now allows obstetrician-gynecologists to treat men for sexually transmitted infections. In September, ABOG ruled that ob-gyns risk losing their board certification if they treated male patients in most circumstances except for emergencies, family planning and genetic counseling. But following a New York Times story about the policy and how it affected a Boston-area ob-gyn, the board revised its definition of obstetrician-gynecologist to allow clinicians to evaluate and manage sexually transmitted infections in men and also screen them for anal cancer. Like cervical cancer, anal cancer is usually caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV, which is sexually transmitted. This type of cancer is rare, but its incidence is increasing, especially among men and women infected with HIV. In making its ruling, the board said it didn’t want to interfere with existing doctor-patient relationships. In changing the policy, the board removed the prohibition against ob-gyns performing anoscopies – an examination of the anal canal as part of the screening for anal cancer – on men.
