Blond hair and blue eyes are one of the rarest combinations in the world. Many native Finns are Sami people who live in the northern region of the country, called Lapland, do not fit into this majority, though. Although native to the country, many of these people have dark hair and eyes, skewing the overall blond population percentage. Still, blond hair is largely attributed to inherited genes prevalent in the southern parts of Finland. Just like its neighbor Finland, Sweden also has some of the highest rates of blond hair throughout the population. About 78% of Sweden’s population has blond hair. Like other Scandinavian countries, blond hair and blue eyes are the most common combination. Around 70% to 80% of the people also have blue eyes. Unsurprisingly, another Scandinavian country has placed itself third on our list of countries with the highest percentage of blond hair citizens. In Norway, an estimated 75% of the population has blond hair, and between 60% to 80% of the population has blue eyes. Although Norway is third on the list, several people still live in Norway with dark hair. Native Norwegians, like the infamous Halvdan Svarte, had extremely dark hair. This 9th-century figure was the father of Norway’s first king. In Estonia, an estimated 70% of the population has blond hair, and 64% of the population has blue eyes. Some people claim that 99% of Estonians have blue eyes, but science and surveys have determined this is an unrealistic assumption. Many Estonians actually have a blue-gray eye coloration that, like blond hair, is passed through generations from family genes. Although positioned outside of Scandinavia on an island, there is a large population in Iceland with blond hair. Nearly 70% of the population has blond hair, and a staggering 90% of the population has blue eyes. Although blond hair and blue eyes are by far the most common combination in Iceland, there is also a rare red hair and green eye combination that is considered one of the rarest in the world found in Iceland. Round 68% of the population in Denmark has blond hair. Denmark was one of the first countries the Vikings invaded, so it makes sense that the Danes inherited the trademark Viking blond hair. Interestingly, Danish Vikings have more instances of red hair than Swedish Vikings who retained their beautiful blond hair.

IQ scores are on a decline, reversing a trend that saw scores rising at a steady rate during the 20th century, according to a new study. Researchers from the Ragnar Frisch Centre for Economic Research in Norway studied the IQ scores of about 730,000 Norwegian men born between 1962 and 1991. They found that scores grew by nearly three percentage points every decade for people born between 1962 and 1975. But among those born after 1975, scores fell. The cause of the IQ decline is due to environmental factors, and not genetics, said Ole Rogeburg, a senior research fellow at Ragnar Frisch Centre and co-author of the study on IQ scores, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. “It’s not that dumb people are having more kids than smart people, to put it crudely,” Rogeburg told CNN. “It’s something to do with the environment, because we’re seeing the same differences within families.” Environmental factors include differences in the way young people are educated, increases in time spent online, changes in nutrition and less reading overall. The downward trend is a reversal of the Flynn effect, a term that describes the vast improvement of IQ scores in many parts of the world throughout the 20th century. According to the study, the Flynn effect peaked in the mid-1970s and has declined in the decades since.
