Are you in search of a meaningful life but feel like it eludes you? If you have ever felt this way, I can assure you that you’re not alone. The good news is, it’s completely normal to question our lives and its meaning, and believe it or not, it is a helpful exercise. So how do you define meaningful and what does a meaningful life even look like? This is where it gets tricky because a meaningful life will look different for everyone. Your concept of a meaningful life will not be the same as mine. At a high level, meaning comes from having a purpose and feeling satisfaction with your life. Determining your top core personal values is a good start. If you haven’t done that yet you can try these 3 ways to discover your personal values. Following are 10 personal values (in no particular order) that you can’t go wrong with if you want to start living a more meaningful life. There are also some suggestions on how to live each value. You can start with these, or if you find you have a deeper knowledge of what will create meaning for you then do that.

1. Health

If you value health you make your complete state of wellbeing, physically, mentally and emotionally, your priority. You may also advocate for others to have access to health care or be on the frontline providing health services to the community. Your life will exhibit your commitment to good health and a healthy lifestyle. The World Health Organization (WHO) sets out the following principles of health, which points out that health is not just the absence of illness. It is also considered:

a basic right,

not in and of itself, it is part of a bigger picture, and

it is the fundamental building block for a well-functioning life.

With health as a top personal value your focus is on making health a part of your overall lifestyle. You take steps to ensure you are looking after your physical, emotional and mental state of being.

Whatever your type of family is, that is ok. As someone who values family, when you make decisions, you will consider your family. Having close friends that you can rely on, and them on you, makes the world a less lonely place. It is comforting to know there is someone there that has your back or can make you laugh when you’re feeling down.
