The average age of fatherhood has increased by three-and-a-half years in the past 44 years, according to a Stanford University report, up to 30.9 years from 27.4 years old. The researchers used data from the National Vital Statistics System, which is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “There are better contraceptives, so people are able to choose when they want to have children, and they may want to be secure in a job or further along in their education” before having a child, said Michael Eisenberg, the report’s senior author and an assistant professor of urology and of obstetrics and gynecology at the Stanford University Medical Center. “That’s what we could surmise, but we are seeing this across all education spectrums, geography, race and ethnicity.”
