Should I change by baby’s diaper overnight?

It’s a question we get asked a lot and understandably so! As adults it is difficult to fathom spending the night with pants full of, well, you know what. Yet, babies do it all the time!

So our answer is both yes and no.

If your baby is sleeping you do not need to change their diaper. A dirty diaper isn’t bothering them and so it shouldn’t bother you either! If your baby wakes overnight whether it be to eat or just a typical overnight waking try to limit stimulation and skip a diaper change when possible. If your baby is waking soaked through you can try sizing up and/or using diaper boosters for extra absorption. If your baby is awake and more than wet, by all means change away! Whether your changing their diaper, their clothes, or their sheets it is best to keep lights low and interaction to an absolute minimum. It is important that we set the tone that it is still time for sleep, not play! You’ll want to avoid singing, talking, cuddling, and even eye contact if possible. One last suggestion, as you head into bedtime you’ll want to get baby ready for a full night’s rest with a bit of diaper cream! This makes a full night’s rest in a potentially dirty diaper a bit easier on their behinds! 461 Stand Up to Prevent Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

A study published in March 2018 in BJU International looked at 69,795 healthy middle-aged men over the course of two and a half years and recorded the amount of time they spent sitting, their physical activity, and whether they had lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The results? Those who spent five or more hours per day sitting, as well as those who had low physical activity levels in general, were more likely to develop LUTS (incomplete emptying, urinary frequency or urgency, a weak urinary stream, or having to get up to urinate at night). The fix? If you have to sit all day for work, stand up and walk or move around for five minutes every hour. Or get a standing desk.
