Women with past record of heart attack are more likely to ignore medication, a Canadian study suggests. After studying the data on more than 12,000 patients who survived a heart attack, for a year at least, the researchers found that women were more likely to use prescribed drugs for controlling cholesterol and blood pressure instead of taking the medicines for preventing heart attack. “It is important for both clinicians and patients to move away from the traditional thinking that cardiovascular disease is a man’s disease. The findings highlight the need to offer women more aggressive treatment," said lead study author Kate Smolina, from University of British Columbia. The research was published in American Heart Association journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes. Read more here.

Cranberry juice is good for heart

Drinking two cups of cranberry juice can significantly improve the vascular function and lower the risk of heart diseases, shows a new study. Researchers from the University of Duesseldorf enlisted healthy men in the age group of 18 to 40 years and asked them to drink under two cups of sweetened cranberry juice. The researchers took blood and urine samples at measured intervals and noted improvement in blood circulation, blood pressure and arterial stiffness in the participants. Cranberry is a rich source of polyphenols, an antioxidant which improves blood circulation, kidney function, hormone delivery and waste filtration. The findings were presented at the Cranberry Health Research Conference. Read more here.

Physical therapy is not always effective in back pain

A new research claims physical therapy provides modest relief from low back pain. In fact, they found, that it reduces by itself over the course of time. The researchers studied more than 200 people with recent cases of low back pain who were randomly assigned to physical therapy or no treatment during the first month of the pain. Physical therapy included back manipulation and exercise. The researchers found that early physical therapy produced a modest improvement in the participants’ ability to function after three months, compared to those who had no physical therapy. A year later, they found that these participants reported no improvement in pain. Read more here.:

Ageing weakens financial decision-making powers

Ageing impairs cognitive abilities in people and weakens the ability to manage their financial affairs on their own, shows an American research. The researchers from two different institutes claim the problem is bigger than what doctors and patients tend to believe and have proposed to identify the condition “Age associated financial vulnerability" as a clinical syndrome. The key indicators of this condition include decline in simple mathematical skills, taking more time for simple financial tasks, poor attention span, poor understanding of financial concepts and difficulty in identifying financial risks. The study was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Read more here.

Compulsive texting by girls can affect grades

Girls who text impulsively are more likely to perform poorly in studies than boys, shows a new study. The researchers enlisted 211 girls and 192 boys from different schools in the town of Midwest, US. They designed a compulsive texting scale to examine whether texting interfered with study participants’ ability to complete tasks. They found that girls who texted compulsively were more likely to have poor grades and poor school bonding. “It appears that it is the compulsive nature of texting, rather than sheer frequency, that is problematic," said lead researcher Kelly M. Lister Landman. The study was published in American Psychological Association Journal. Read more here.
