Is an ultrasound as good as a CT scan?

Ultrasounds have some limitations to the structures they can find, and this is usually limited to internal organs. Ultrasounds are not typically ordered for images of bony structures. In contrast, CT scans can provide detailed images of soft tissues, bones, and blood vessels.

Sonography and CT scan are two different kinds of imaging tests we use regularly at Innovative Open MRI & Imaging. The two tests are used to screen patients for cancer and other abnormal findings. Although they are similar in that they are both imaging tools, there are some differences between the two tests and what each is capable of detecting.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of sonography and CT scan.

Radiation Exposure

Sonography, or ultrasound, works by using high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of internal structures. With the use of ultrasound, there is no exposure to radiation. However, with a CT scan, there is some radiation exposure, about the same as an average person receives from environmental radiation in 3 to 5 years. Because of the radiation exposure involved in CT scans, this type of test is not recommended for pregnant women or children. Ultrasounds have some limitations to the structures they can find, and this is usually limited to internal organs. Ultrasounds are not typically ordered for images of bony structures. In contrast, CT scans can provide detailed images of soft tissues, bones, and blood vessels. Ultrasounds are routinely used in prenatal care and other procedures such as the removal of gall stones or kidney stones. CT scans are better used for detecting certain cancer tumors or other abnormalities within the body.

Imaging Procedure

The techniques used to capture images in sonography and CT scans are different. Ultrasounds use a probe called a transducer that is placed directly on the skin or inside the body, such as in a transvaginal ultrasound. Before the transducer is placed on the body, a thin layer of gel is applied to the skin, which allows the sound waves to be transmitted through the gel and into the body. An ultrasound usually takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. A CT scan uses a series of X-ray images to take pictures from different angles. Using computer processing technology, the X-ray creates sections of images of the bones and soft tissue inside the body. Each section can then be viewed to provide a better overall picture of the area being scanned. A CT scan can be completed in under 5 minutes.

Cost

CT scans are more costly than sonography. The typical cost of a CT scan is between $1,200 and $3,200, while sonography costs about $100 to $1,000. Costs may differ depending on the area being examined. This information may be of importance if you don’t have health insurance or if your insurance won’t cover the cost of one of these tests.
