Alliance Urology is proud to offer a variety of services to help treat common urologic problems. One of the issues we regularly treat is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is also known as prostate gland enlargement, a common condition among men, especially as they get older. An enlarged prostate can lead to uncomfortable urinary symptoms, such as obstructing to prevent urine flow from the bladder. BPH can also cause issues with the bladder, urinary tract, or kidneys. While there are various treatment options for BPH, we will focus on a specific service called UroLift. In this blog, we will break down what you need to know about UroLift and answer common questions relating to this service.

What is UroLift?

UroLift is an FDA-approved, minimally invasive office-based procedure that helps relieve symptoms associated with mild to moderate BPH. The UroLift System uses implants to lift and hold the enlarged prostate out of the way and opens the urethra directly to alleviate obstruction symptoms. The procedure itself is straightforward and effective, all without requiring any cutting, heating, or tissue removal. It can be performed in a physician’s office under local anesthesia.

What is the success rate of UroLift?

According to clinical studies, the UroLift System offers a significant improvement in quality of life, including decreased BPH symptoms and improved urinary flow. It has proven to be durable for five years and typically avoids complications when combined with future BPH treatment options. Studies have also shown that unlike other BPH medications, the UroLift System helps preserve sexual function. The overall success rate of UroLift is high, with only 2-3% of men seeking retreatment each year. UroLift has shown to be a safe and effective way to reduce obstructive prostate tissue. The procedure itself is quick and boasts immediate results with minimal recovery time. Most men can return to work two or three days after having the procedure. While UroLift often replaces the need for BPH medications, it is still safe to take BPH medications in conjunction with the UroLift System.

Disadvantages of UroLift

Some of the most common side effects of UroLift are a temporary burning sensation while urinating that may last a few days after the procedure. It’s important to note that UroLift is effective for men with mild to moderate cases of BPH and is not an appropriate treatment for men with very large prostates. Those taking prescribed blood thinners will need to stop taking them for a brief time before the procedure, so UroLift is not suitable for those unable to cease blood thinner use.
