WHEN IS AN American woman in her prime? What are the best years in her life? The answers to those two questions might or might not be the same. East County residents, both women and men, talked about it. Darrika Sutter of Oakley chose 35 as the year a woman is in her prime. “By then she’s not yet over the hill. By the time she’s 35 she’s learned a lot about life and how to use that knowledge,” she said. “The best years come later, when her kids are grown. She then gets to be her own person and can enjoy a rewarding life with her adult kids and even with grandchildren.” Antioch’s Roland Stewart picks 48 for a woman in her prime. “Before then women still are immature, learning about life and survival. By 48 she is old enough to enjoy life. She has self-contentment and is able to love others rather than just herself. That also may be her best time of life. But the truly best years come later when she’s achieved a good spiritual life.” Brentwood’s Karim Garcia said a woman hits her prime at age 30. “She knows herself better by then, and has self-assurance. By then she has accomplished achievements and is looking forward for more to come. The best years come later in her 40s for a lot of the same reasons. That’s when a woman realizes what’s truly important for her rather than just her desires.” “A woman reaches her prime in her 40s,” said Brentwood’s Patricia Grubbs. “By then she’s finished having kids. Also, she knows her body pretty well by then. The 40s also are her best years for the same reasons.” For Oakley’s Julian Mijares, a woman’s prime extends from ages 30 to 50. “She’s into her career and relationships with others are settled,” she said. “A woman during those years knows where she’s been and she can happily plan for the future because of her experience and her common sense. Her best years are exactly the same.” Leamon Clifton of Antioch offered his man’s view. “A woman’s prime is between the ages of 28 and 45,” he said. “They’re busy raising kids, and they are capable of doing what they want. After that, physical and mental handicaps develop. Her best years come when she achieves religious faith.” “A woman is in her prime in her 40s,” said Shai Glosser of Oakley. “That’s when she’s had enough experience to give her self-confidence. Her best years depend on whether or not she has children. Without kids it’s the 40s for the same reasons. By then she knows how to get what she wants. For those of us with kids the best years begin at birth and extend to age 12,” she laughed. Lindsey Stillman of Oakley said a woman’s prime is in her 30s. “That’s when she has her career set. She has her family. She’s still young but has the wisdom learned from earlier experiences. Noel Fowlie of Discovery Bay said a woman’s prime extends from her late 20s through 45. “During those years her body is in good shape and she looks good. All of her parts are working as they should,” she said. “Her best years are restricted to her late 20s, when she has the most fun. She’s having babies which also are fun, and her family is solidly together.” That’s it for the women. Next week’s “Buzz” will be about a man’s prime.
