Learn More »In hospital, patients usually poop in a bedpan or on a commode. A bedpan is a metal or plastic pan that is placed under a patient’s bottom while they are in bed. A commode is a portable toilet that can be placed next to a bed. Patients may also use a regular toilet if they are able to walk to the bathroom. For patients who are unable to move themselves, nurses or aides will help position them on the bedpan or commode. The patient may be asked to bear down, or push, to help move the stool along. For patients who are incontinent, or cannot control their bowel movements, nurses will clean them up after they poop. The average person produces four pounds of feces per year, which is one ounce of feces per day. When a patient is in the hospital, there are several methods of assisting him or her in pooping. Constipation can result in mechanical ventilation delays, increased hospitalization time, and increased risk of death in the intensive care unit. The majority of people will poop after surgery. This can be attributed to the anesthesia and medication used during the procedure. When a ventilator is in use, there are a few ways for people to poop. A bedside toilet is a small toilet that is placed next to a bed and can be used as a toilet. People who are in an institution for long-term care may benefit from using special medical equipment that allows them to use the toilet safely and with dignity. According to a study, bedridden toilet systems improved patients’ mental well-being. Sitting in a wheelchair or lying in bed for an extended period of time can result in pressure ulcers. If a person needs to poop, they can use one of a number of methods. Softening and laxatives may be beneficial in increasing stool frequency and softness. Anacort (Senokot) or polyethylene glycol (Miralax) may help with a hard stool problem. When digestive issues are not treated, they can lead to more serious health problems.
