Actresses have enviable manes which are always lush and thick-looking. How can those of us with finer, thinner hair get such voluminous-looking hairdos? We list some tips and tricks professionals use to achieve such hair looks.

1. Blow-drying with large round brushes

The best way to give hair a lift without it looking messy, is to blow-dry it in a way that gives it a lift. Most hairstylists do this by wrapping the hair at the roots around a large round brush, and blow drying it upwards, holding the hair taut and away from the scalp. This sets the hair in a way that it is lifted from the root, but also sleek.

2. Teasing and back-combing hair

Another way to add volume while styling hair, is back-combing. This is a technique that teases the hair and makes it look voluminous. As the term suggests, you have to comb hair backwards for this. Essentially, you comb hair backwards, like you’re peeling a vegetable from top to bottom. But, you have to only comb the bottom of the hair, and then part hair in a way that you can lay a sleek section of hair on top of the back-combed section, so that the hair underneath is poofy, but the top looks smooth. If this sounds too complicated for you, or you don’t want to risk tangling your hair, avoid this and try the other methods mentioned here.

3. Big rollers to lift hair at the crown

A lot of makeup and hair artists blow-dry their clients’ hair and then wrap all the smoothened sections of hair into big rollers. The hair at the roots, especially on the crown, is rolled into hot rollers so the heat sets the hair into that lifted, volumised shape. This is easy to do at home.

4. Extensions

A lot of actresses wear clip-on hair extensions for their performances, to give an extra-glamorous and lush mane look. While the extensions available in the market previously were quite cheap-looking, you get a lot of realistic-looking, natural extensions now. The only con with this is that it can be painful and heavy to wear, especially if you have a weak scalp which hurts when you use clips or tie it up.

5. Volumising mousses and sprays

6. Dry shampoo

Dry shampoo essentially soaks up excess grease, so if your hair is flat and oily, it really helps zap the sebum and refresh hair. If you find your hair looking lifeless due to greasiness, this is an affordable and easy way to instantly volumise it. The Dove Volume and Fullness Dry Shampoo is practically industrial-strength, because it soaks up oil with an efficiency that is hard to process. Of course, it volumises hair too! Just don’t use it on dry hair, because it is specifically meant for oily hair.

7. Waves and texture

Waviness helps add a variation in the shape of your hair, creating the illusion of more body and volume than there actually is. So, using a hair curler to add some waves to the hair, helps make a straight section of hair look more full and less flat. You can also add a texturising spray like the pH Texturising Spray, to enhance your waves, for a tousled, beachy hair look. This also has a lovely fragrance, which makes hair smell great.

8. Highlighting for added texture

Hair colour can play a huge role in making hair look multi-dimensional. If your entire hair is a single tone, it can look flat. The presence of a slight variation in that colour, be it with highlights or balayage, creates the illusion of texture and fullness.
