You may have heard about the benefits of biotin (otherwise known as vitamin B7) for your hair growth. And many people assume that vitamins and oils will do wonders for your beard.

In many cases, this is correct, especially if you have a vitamin deficiency already. However, many people overlook the importance of minerals for their facial hair. Zinc is a mineral that can help support your beard growth. Plus, it keeps you healthy in a lot of other ways. So what does zinc do for a beard?

Zinc for beard strength

Zinc helps to strengthen hair follicles, supporting natural growth of your beard. The mineral may also help with your scalp, skin, and fingernails. A lack of zinc in your diet can make it more difficult for your body to break down nutrients and proteins that aid in the production of beard hair. Zinc has also been linked to an increase in testosterone in men with an already deficient zinc intake. Testosterone is a vital hormone in many traditionally male characteristics, as well as muscle growth. A low testosterone level can make it difficult to grow a full beard. On the other hand, increasing the level of testosterone to a normal level can kick start or fast track beard growth. The recommended daily intake for zinc is 11mg, but studies show that 30mg helps to increase free testosterone in the body. However, unlike vitamin C or biotin, extra zinc in the body is not simply excreted through the urine.

Don’t have too much!

Zinc toxicity can start at 40mg per day, which can lead to nausea, headaches, abdominal cramps, and even vomiting and diarrhea. It is important to only supplement zinc if you are not getting enough from your diet. Zinc is a mineral found in many different foods. The main foods that are high in zinc include beef, chicken, oysters, crab, beans, nuts, and oatmeal. While zinc can be supplemented, the easiest way to increase zinc in your diet is to eat the right kinds of foods. Zinc deficiency is most common in people with gastrointestinal disorders and alcoholics, or in people who hold to a vegetarian or vegan diet. If you are someone who avoids these “high zinc” foods, you may want to look into supplementing your daily intake of zinc. Like most beard growth products, zinc supplements help to resolve a gap in nutrition. Zinc can do for a beard only that which isn’t already being done. Just like taking extra biotin will only help if there is already a deficiency in vitamin B7, taking extra zinc will only increase testosterone if you’re not getting enough zinc in your diet already. Furthermore, taking too much zinc can actually lead to adverse effects on your body like nausea, headaches, and diarrhea. However, If you find you have characteristics of low testosterone levels, or your diet cuts out foods like beef and chicken, it may be worth supplementing your daily intake of zinc. It will help raise testosterone, strengthen hair follicles, and keep your beard growing fast and strong.

Does zinc brighten the skin?

“Importantly, zinc is also a powerful antioxidant, with the ability to capture and reduce harmful free radicals to reduce intracellular oxidative stress.” If that weren't enough, Cleeve adds that zinc can improve skin tone and reduce hyperpigmentation, helping you to achieve a bright, even complexion.

“When used topically, zinc is a strong anti-inflammatory and is commonly used to treat acne, rosacea and eczema, as well as accelerating wound healing,” says Dr. Idriss. Research suggests that acne may partially be associated with a low zinc supply in the body, too. “It’s thought to be related to zinc’s ability to limit oil secretion in the pores,” Cleeve adds. Then there’s the anti-aging benefits: zinc is known to encourage the production of collagen fibers and elastin, which can firm skin and boost healing. “Both help support the underlying structure of the skin, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles and other signs of aging,” explains Cleeve. “Importantly, zinc is also a powerful antioxidant, with the ability to capture and reduce harmful free radicals to reduce intracellular oxidative stress.” If that weren’t enough, Cleeve adds that zinc can improve skin tone and reduce hyperpigmentation, helping you to achieve a bright, even complexion. “Studies show that zinc can suppress factors responsible for hyperpigmentation, such as the over-stimulation of hormones, scarring or sun damage, and reduce the production of melanin,” she says.
