When you take a look at the back of your shampoo bottle, you might notice saw palmetto among the list of ingredients. That’s not an accident—among other health benefits, the berries from the saw palmetto tree show promising results when it comes to improving the quality of your hair (and preventing hair loss). Here’s what you need to know about how this plant works:

What is Saw Palmetto?

If you live in a more tropical climate, such as Florida, the Bahamas, or Georgia, there’s a chance you’ve come face-to-face with the saw palmetto tree. You probably don’t want to get too close, though, or you risk encountering the saw-like “teeth” on the leaves of this tree. Despite the name, it’s the berries of the tree that provide the medicinal benefits it’s so famous for. From antioxidant properties to anti-inflammatory properties, the list is far from short. While scientists are still uncovering what the berries can and can’t do, there’s some evidence to suggest that they may be able to help with:

Prostate health

Inflammation

Improving hormone balance

Preventing hair thinning and loss

An underactive bladder

Those who wish to use saw palmetto can take it in a variety of ways: you can grind the berries to make a tea, take it as a tablet, or even use a shampoo that has the ingredient in it.

How Can Saw Palmetto Thicken Hair?

There are plenty of different causes of hair loss, but a major one is androgenetic alopecia or AGA. It affects millions of people each year, and while scientists are still studying what causes it, they do know that a major trigger for the condition is dihydrotestosterone or DHT Everyone produces this hormone naturally, but some people tend to be more sensitive to it than others. Those who are more sensitive to it stand a greater chance of developing AGA.

Saw Palmetto May Be Combat AGA-Related Hair Loss

There are a lot of different treatments for AGA, both prescription and natural, and the berries from the saw palmetto tree might just be another one. One study found that saw palmetto was able to improve hair growth in 60% of male participants. Saw palmetto does this by blocking or reducing the amount of DHT that ends up in your hair follicles. If you’re naturally sensitive to the hormone, this plant could be a potential solution.

So, not only does saw palmetto show a lot of promise for combating the hair loss related to AGA, but it may also be able to thicken your hair too. In the results of another study, a small number of adults saw an increase in their hair density by 35%. The participants applied the plant topically for a couple of months to see these results. Although there’s still plenty of research to conduct, data like this is why you’ll find saw palmetto on your shampoo’s ingredient list. While those who have AGA can look forward to saw palmetto’s DHT-blocking effects, you don’t necessarily need a scalp condition to see thicker hair. People who just want to increase their hair’s density have a lot to gain from this natural remedy too. Keep in mind that, regardless of how you plan to use saw palmetto, you probably won’t see any results right away. Based on the research, it could take a few months before you see an increase in the density or thickness of your hair. The Environmental Working Group rates this plant low (safe) on their allergen and toxicity scale, but you should always exercise caution when trying new ingredients. Have you used shampoo with saw palmetto inside or tried this ancient remedy in some other way? Feel free to tell us more at: research@collectivelabs.com!

Why Is Saw Palmetto Included in Hair Care Products?

As an active ingredient in our hair care product, saw palmetto plays an active role in stimulating hair growth. The berries of the saw palmetto are known to be a dihydrotestosterone (DHT) blocker. They specifically affect the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, which is responsible for converting testosterone into DHT – the hormone responsible for male and female pattern hair thinning. Like many of our other active ingredients, palmetto also has ancillary benefits as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory.
