Does peanuts increase uric acid?

Animal proteins generally contain the largest amounts of purines. If you have gout, you might need to restrict your intake of high-purine foods. Peanuts and nuts in general fall into the low purine category.

Peanut contain purines -- compounds that your body metabolizes into uric acid -- but only small amounts. Uric acid buildup can cause gout, a painful arthritic condition that occurs when uric acid crystals lodge in the joints, causing swelling, pain and inflammation. Animal proteins generally contain the largest amounts of purines. If you have gout, you might need to restrict your intake of high-purine foods. Peanuts and nuts in general fall into the low purine category.

Purines in Peanuts

Foods considered high in purines contain 150 to 1,000 milligrams of purine per 100 grams of food, according to Arthritis Today. Moderate purine foods contain 50 to 150 milligrams of purines per 100 grams, with low-purine foods containing less than 50 milligrams. Peanuts, despite their name, are legumes, not nuts. Although most legumes besides peanuts fall into the moderate purine category, Nutrition.com places peanuts in the low-purine category, containing less than 50 milligrams per 100 grams.

Why Purines Cause Gout

Purines are chemical compounds found in nucleotides, structures found in cell DNA and RNA. When your body destroys cells or they become damaged, purines break down into uric acid, a waste product that normally passes harmlessly through the kidneys and out of the body in your urine. When you have very high uric acid levels, your body might not be able to eliminate it all, causing your serum uric acids levels to rise. Eating large amounts of foods high in purines can raise uric acid levels, but other conditions, such as an increase in uric acid production or a decrease in the kidney's ability to remove it, can also cause gout. Excess uric acid crystals can deposit in certain joints, most frequently the big toe, although other joints can also develop gout.

Restricting Purines

Even if you don't normally eat a large amount of foods containing purines, your doctor might want to restrict your intake if you have gout or high uric acid levels from another cause. If you have high levels, keeping purine intake as low as possible keeps your body from adding fuel to the fire in the form of more uric acid. The average person consumes 600 to 1,000 milligrams of purines per day; if you have gout, you should restrict your intake to 100 to 150 milligrams per day, Litholink recommends.
