When you lie down, fluid pooled in your legs is able to circulate through your body more easily than when you stand. Your kidneys filter this fluid and send it to your bladder. Having a condition that impairs your circulation, such as congestive heart failure or diabetes, can lead to excessive swelling in your legs that fills your bladder faster. Many people experience an increased need to pee when lying in bed at night, a condition known as nocturia. It becomes more common with age and is estimated to affect more than 50 percent of men and women over the age of 60. It isn’t a disease but a symptom of many other conditions.
