8 Foods That Are Difficult to Digest

Are there times after you eat when you feel gassy, bloated or experience heartburn? If so, these symptoms may be due to something you ate. Approximately 70 million people in the United States suffer from a digestive disorder, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), acid reflux, diarrhea, constipation or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). At A.M.P. Floracel®, we have gathered eight hard to digest foods for you to avoid and to keep your gut functioning properly.

1. Artificial Sweetener

For those of you who like to cut calories by adding artificial sweetener into your morning coffee, decide against it in the future. Sweeteners are partially digested and cause bloating, gas and diarrhea. We recommend that you use natural sweeteners instead. Natural sweeteners aren’t calorie-free, however, they are sweeter than sugar, you don’t need as much to achieve your preferred level of sweetness and it helps reduce carbohydrates and calories.

2. Chocolate

It’s not the actual chocolate that makes it one of the worst foods to digest, but the caffeine within it. Caffeine has the ability to trigger heartburn and IBS symptoms in those who are prone to digestive disorders as well as cause loose stools and diarrhea. If giving up chocolate is not an option, then we recommend that you opt for dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains polyphenols that can slow GI function as well as increase water absorption to prevent diarrhea. Also cocoa is a good source of fiber.

3. Processed Foods

Processed foods are one of the worst foods because they increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, soda and potato chips, can cause bloating, cramping and other GI issues. We recommend that you cut out processed foods completely from your diet. However, if you can’t cut them out completely, try combining them with foods that digest slowly. Did you know regular intake of aloe vera digestive supplements can ease your digestion problems? 4. Greasy or Fried Foods

Greasy or fried food is a guilty pleasure shared by many. However, these types of foods are one of the worst to consume for a reason. These foods are high in saturated fat, increasing the risk of acid reflux and heartburn. If your guilty pleasure happens to get the best of you, keep in mind to cook it with plant-based fat and to avoid washing it down with alcohol.

5. Spicy Food

We all like spicy food, some more than others. Spicy food, regardless of what it is, can cause extreme heartburn. However, if you eat these foods in conjunction with cooling foods (milk, yogurt and cottage cheese), it will reduce the burning sensation and the probiotics from the cool foods will aid in your digestion.

6. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Though fresh produce is a vital part of a healthy diet, for some with sensitive GI systems, raw fruits and vegetables may be difficult to digest. Fresh produce consists of high amounts of insoluble fiber that can move quickly through the intestinal tract causing loose stool, diarrhea, gas and bloating. The best way to eat fresh fruits and vegetables is by cooking them thoroughly. Cooking raw produce can help break down some of the fiber and make it easier to digest.

7. Coffee

The one beverage with the power to get you up and going in the morning can be your digestive system’s worst nightmare. Coffee has been known to cause stomach irritation and stimulate acid production, which can lead to digestive inflammation, heartburn and GERD. In addition, the caffeine in coffee acts as a diuretic, meaning it can cause you to be dehydrated and constipated. If you cannot live without coffee, we recommend that you limit yourself to one cup every two hours, avoid drinking it on an empty stomach and combine it with a snack that’s easy to digest.

8. Acidic Foods

Oranges, lemons, grapefruit, and tomatoes sound healthy, however, they are also very acidic. Acidic foods have the ability to increase your risk of acid reflux and GERD. We recommend that you remove acidic foods completely from your diet. If it’s not possible for you to completely ban them, try limiting yourself to eating them every once in a while on a full stomach. A.M.P. Floracel® may provide an alternative, natural way to relieve digestive discomfort. This natural supplement may support those suffering from conditions like Crohn’s, colitis, diverticulitis, diabetes and more. Contact us today to place an order or for more information!
