When we think of cranberry, we think of a glass of red juice or we think of a woman with a urinary tract infection. But why should men be drinking cranberry juice or taking a cranberry extract?

When men are over the age of 55, in most cases the prostate gland will enlarge. The enlargement of the prostate is called benign prostatic hyperplasia. This type of prostate enlargement isn't thought to be a precursor to prostate cancer. With this condition, the urinary stream may be weak, or stop and start. In some cases, it can lead to infection, bladder stones, and reduced kidney function. Cranberry juice or extracts will not reduce the size of an enlarged prostate, but when the prostate is enlarged and urine flow is weak the urine will stay in the bladder longer. This is due to the bladder not emptying out completely during urination. This is the reason men will have to go to the bathroom more. It’s not because they need to pee more, but because when the bladder is not completely empty, you have the urge to go more times until the bladder is empty. The reason for cranberry is to prevent the urine that sits in the bladder from causing infection and it could very well lower the risk of bladder cancer. Bladder cancer occurs mainly in older people. About 9 out of 10 people with this cancer are over the age of 55. The average age at the time of diagnosis is 73. Overall, the chance men will develop this cancer during their life is about 1 in 27. So my simply drinking organic cranberry juice each morning or taking a cranberry extract daily can help improve bladder health and prevent possible infections or even cancer when men are dealing with an enlarged prostate gland. Men, you need to get yearly prostate check ups to ensure optimal health and to prevent more serious problems in the future.

How do you detect a prostate infection?

You'll need to have a urine test so the doctor can check for bacteria and other signs of infection. You might also need a blood test. You might have a digital rectal examination to see if your prostate is inflamed and painful, and the doctor may examine your stomach area (abdomen) and penis.

Tests for chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS)

There is no single test to diagnose CPPS. Your doctor will need to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms before they make a diagnosis. This can take some time. You might be diagnosed with CPPS if you’ve had some of the symptoms listed above for more than three of the last six months. But your doctor may diagnose CPPS sooner than this. They will ask you about your symptoms or give you a questionnaire to fill in. Your doctor may also ask about your medical history. This can help them work out what is causing your symptoms, and which treatments are most likely to help. You’ll need to have a urine test to make sure you don’t have a urine infection. You may also have a physical examination, including a digital rectal examination (DRE), and some other tests, such as a PSA test. Ask your doctor for more information about other tests you may have. For some tests, you might need to visit a doctor at the hospital who specialises in urinary problems (a urologist) or a specialist nurse.

Worried about having a DRE?

It’s natural to feel worried or embarrassed about having tests, but some men find the idea of having a DRE upsetting. For example, if you’ve ever been sexually abused, you might feel very upset about having this test. There’s no right or wrong way to feel, and it’s your choice whether or not to have a DRE. If you do decide to have a DRE, explain your situation to your doctor. They can talk you through the test and help to reassure you. It may also help to talk to a counsellor.
