Valentine's Day is a great excuse to spend some quality time with your loved one and - if you're lucky - get cosy between the sheets! Whether you’re male or female, young or old, a low libido can strike at any time for a whole host of different reasons. While your sex drive will naturally fluctuate through the years, if your lack of interest persists and concerns you, it might be time to look at your lifestyle and talk to a professional. In addition to hormones, pregnancy, medication and other physical causes, libido is also closely linked with external factors such as stress, relationships, diet, exercise and sleep.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha, AKA the ‘love drug’, has long been used as a natural sexual stimulant for its powerful effect on sexual desire. Research suggests that men and women who consume Ashwagandha experience increased libido, lubrication, and satisfaction. With a long history in traditional medicine and Kama Sutra, Ashwagandha is a great supplement to try that’s safe and effective.

Rhodiola

If you have symptoms of adrenal fatigue, irritability or feel generally lethargic, then Rhodiola may be worth a try. This wonder herb works in supporting our adrenal glands to prevent depletion of the ‘happy chemical’ serotonin and dopamine, leaving enough for us to remain happy and energised. Rhodiola is said to work pretty fast too so if you’re thinking of getting frisky, pop one an hour or two prior.

Omega 3s

Research has shown that Omega 3 fatty acids can help decrease anxiety and depression, and as these are closely linked with low libido, your desire may be increased. Similarly to Rhodiola, Omega 3 fatty acids can also help increase dopamine levels, which can improve mood and help to trigger arousal. Additionally, they can help to boost all-over moisture in the skin, and as we know dryness and sexy-time do not go hand in hand...

Vitamin D

Vitamin D3 is commonly referred to as the "sunshine vitamin” although most New Zealanders don’t spend enough time outdoors or are super vigilant with sun protection (not a bad thing!) to reap the benefits – so that’s where supplementation comes in. Among other benefits, Vitamin D impacts your sex hormones and mood. If you tend to feel friskier in the warmer months, there’s a good reason for it – you’re probably getting more vitamin D than in winter. Vitamin D deficiency can cause low oestrogen in women and likewise testosterone in men, which is bad news for your sex drive.

B vitamins

Known as a mood regulator, vitamin B plays various integral roles in the body. Most notably is its ability to better manage anxiety, stress levels and energy. All in all, taking B vitamins will help to nurture the nervous system, improve mood and restore your ‘oomph’ leading to increased sexual desire.

Magnesium and zinc

The most important tip to get you in the mood this Valentine's Day: Get your blood flowing! Stack your Valentine's Day menu with foods and supplements rich in magnesium, zinc and vitamin C— nutrients that aid in blood circulation, help support healthy testosterone levels and increase sex drive.

How much ginger should I take a day for testosterone?

Ginger is a spice that has traditionally been treated as medicine in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, doses of 1-3g can reduce nausea and ease digestion quite effectively; superloading the powdered rhizome (vertical root) at 10-15g daily might increase testosterone.

Typically, dosages of 1-3g are used as a preventative treatment for nausea. This applies to morning sickness in pregnancy, motion sickness, and sometimes chemotherapy or operation-induced nausea. For other usages of ginger, 1g is typically used. This seems to be effective for increasing intestinal motility, but was insufficient in reducing blood glucose in the one study attempting it. For testosterone boosting, a supplement is probably advised. The dosage used in rats, after conversion to humans based on Body Surface Area, equates to about 14g from natural sources (usually less of an extract percentage than is possible with supplements). Ginger can be ingested via several ways, and the following is an approximate standardization table for 1g of Ginger Extract:[55]
