How Surgeons Prevent Infection If Shaving Is Required

We mentioned that surgeons do sometimes shave their patients before a surgery is performed. In these cases, surgeons will typically use an electric razor instead of a traditional razor. Electric razors help avoid the presence of micro-abrasions as the hair is removed, thus keeping the infection risk very low.

I just watched a documentary on the separation of conjoined twins. It said the surgery lasted 16 hours. This triggered a question I have had for years. As a frequent bathroom user, I wonder how does the surgeon last 16 hours? Use adult diapers? Get a substitute surgeon? Just have everything stop and run out and then have to scrub in again?

I'm sure there are some surgeons out there who would disagree, with this premise, but after all they're only human. So of course a surgeon might have to take a bathroom break during an especially long operation. And I don't know about you, but I find the idea of being operated on by somebody wearing a diaper a bit unsettling. I am told that surgeons facing a long session with the knife tend to cut down on their fluid intake before things get underway. And I read at least on account of a surgeon who wore a Foley catheter so he could pee on the go.

I think that's a bit much.

You have to bear in mind that during a major operation that is going to take several hours there is certainly going to be more than one surgeon on hand.
