Learn More »A high hemoglobin count indicates an above-normal level of the iron-containing protein in red blood cells. Hemoglobin (often abbreviated as Hb or Hgb) is the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells. Hemoglobin, which gives red blood cells their color, helps carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and carbon dioxide back to the lungs to be exhaled. The threshold for a high hemoglobin count differs slightly from one medical practice to another. Hi and thank you for your question. It sounds like your surgeon is being cautious and safe and ensuring that your healing goes as well as possible after surgery. Particularly because a tummy tuck is an elective surgery, I recommend ensuring that you are as healthy as possible for your procedure. It is possible that your hemoglobin could increase to your surgeon's required level in that short amount of time, however, you should be getting your level checked again closer to your surgery time. I would be prepared for the possibility of having to reschedule your surgery, however, hopefully it will increase. I would continue to take iron and vitamin b and ensuring a healthy, balanced diet. Best of luck.
