Your kidneys tirelessly filter about 50 gallons of blood every day and produce up to 2 quarts of urine. To keep your kidneys healthy, plenty of water, sufficient rest and a well-balanced diet are key. Additionally, certain foods, such as carrots and cilantro, offer potential kidney-specific nutritional and health benefits.

Beta-Carotene Benefits

Beta-carotene, the water-soluble form of vitamin A in carrots, helps the kidneys filter toxins out of the blood and prevent urinary tract infections, according to Dr. George D. Pamplona-Roger, author of the book "Foods That Heal." An animal study published in the November 2012 issue of the "Journal of Thrombosis and Thrombolysis" found that beta-carotene reduced inflammation and helped repair damage to kidney-filtering structures known as tubules. Researchers noted that beta-carotene worked at the genetic level to inhibit two different genes that promote inflammation in the kidneys.

Carrot Pectin Effects

Carrots contain a high concentration of pectin, a form of soluble fiber responsible for the characteristic gel-like consistency of jams, jellies and preserves. An animal study published in the October 2009 issue of the journal "Patologicheskaia Fiziologiia i Eksperimental'naia Terapiia" found that pectin was a more effective as a diuretic -- a substance that increases urine production -- and at managing symptoms of kidney failure than activated charcoal or polyphepan, two commonly used diuretics. Pectin also decreased levels of creatinine, a marker of kidney function that, when elevated, indicates stress on the kidneys. Researchers concluded that pectin shows potential as a natural therapy option for treatment of chronic kidney failure. Further studies are needed to determine if these benefits extend to humans.

Cilantro Detoxification Benefits

Cilantro may help reduce the damaging effects of lead on the kidneys, according to an animal study published in the October 2001 issue of the "Journal of Ethnopharmacology." In the study, 25 days of supplementation with cilantro decreased lead levels in the body and reduced lead-induced kidney damage. Researchers concluded that cilantro helped remove lead from the body and prevented injury to the kidneys. Cilantro is also useful for removing mercury, a toxic metal that decreases the kidneys' ability to filter and increases risk for kidney disease, according to R.A.S. Hemat, author of the book "Principles of Orthomolecularism."
