Positively Healthy

Foods have a long history of being used as medicines.

With our 24/7 news cycle and constant health discoveries and research studies one important healthy food keeps flying under the radar — the pumpkin.

More precisely, the seed and extract of the pumpkin.

You've probably seen pumpkin seeds for sale in the nut section of your local grocery or maybe as a part of a trail mix blend. Though they've caught on, they're still severely under-appreciated for their role as medicine. In my practice we've used pumpkin seeds, pumpkin seed oil in a capsule and pumpkin seed extract to treat many bladder-related conditions; not infections but bladder-related complaints such as an overactive bladder, urinary incontinence, too many nighttime trips to the bathroom and bladder spasm. Herbalists traditionally used pumpkin seed extract and pumpkin seed oil to strengthen bladder tissue and help the bladder expand and contract. It helped the nerves of the bladder to regain control after childbirth and helped with the many trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night for people over age 50. It’s also known to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles by blocking certain enzymes. It’s also used to regulate and maintain prostate health. Those uses are still applicable today. Many herbal companies tout excellent research into the benefits of pumpkin seeds. If you suffer from a weak bladder you may do well to add pumpkin seeds to your diet. They're most helpful in the raw state and especially absorbable if they've been sprouted like those sold by the company All Raw, available at many stores and in large bags from Costco. A current trend is to make pumpkin seed butter out of them, just as you would peanut butter. For a more medicinal approach you may want to try adding pumpkin seed oil to your diet in the form of a capsule or as an edible oil for salad dressings, etc. A typical dose is 1 to 3 1,000 mg capsules a day. You can find these at your local health food store. For the deepest healing you'll need pumpkin seed extract. This is found online and for a strong enough product plan to spend about $30 to $50 a bottle. So, pumpkins aren’t just for carving at Halloween or making holiday pies. They can be part of your everyday health regimen. Trudi Pratt has a chiropractic and clinical nutrition practice in Redding. Reach her at www.drtrudipratt.com or at 244-7873.

What happens during a prostate exam?

Your health care provider will insert a gloved finger into the rectum and feel the prostate for hard, lumpy, or abnormal areas. The test takes only a few minutes to complete. You may feel slight, momentary discomfort during the test. The procedure does not cause significant pain or any damage to the prostate.

Doctors use the digital rectal exam (DRE) as a relatively simple test to check the prostate. Because the prostate is an internal organ, your doctor cannot look at it directly. But because the prostate lies in front of the rectum, they can feel it by inserting a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum. It may be performed in the screening of prostate cancer. Who Should Get a Digital Rectal Exam? Not all medical institutions agree on when men should begin screening (routine testing) for prostate cancer or even if a DRE should be part of the screening. To help detect prostate cancer in its early stages, the American Cancer Society recommends that men talk to their doctors about the benefits, risks, and limitations of prostate cancer screening before deciding whether to be tested. For most men at average risk, discussions about screening begin at age 50. However, some doctors recommend that men at higher risk of prostate cancer -- African-American men or men with a family history of prostate cancer -- start screening earlier.
